St. Mary’s Island is a 150 acre, residential redevelopment by Countryside Maritime, a joint venture between the Homes and Communities Agency and Countryside that forms part of the 350 acre Chatham Maritime regeneration project.

Our works, comprising the design and construction of a surface water outfall, included a reinforced concrete headwall built into a stone revetment constructed during the Napoleonic Wars by French prisoners of war.

The works included CFA piling to a depth of 20m under restricted access and loading constraints, partial removal of a flood defence wall, 1200mm diameter pipework, two 2.1m diameter manholes and retaining structures, all completed on the landside of a flood wall and below the Mean High Water Springs level.

Procured as a two-stage tender, during the pre-construction phase we developed the design and coordinated all the licence applications and consents. This included Marine Management Organisation and River Works licences, a Water Framework Directive Assessment and Environment Agency consent.

Sites are always very well presented. First impressions count and if a site looks well organised and clean when you arrive then generally this is applied throughout the management of the projects. Indeed, all five projects I am Cummins PM for, have been managed to a high standard and equally the safety records and standards are very good.

    - Iain Brooks, Cummins

Site staff were pleased to have had Knights Brown on the team, they were proactive from day one to the end towards potential issues and responsive to a changing site environment for works.

    - David Sheldon, Cummins

Knights Brown performed very well on this project in terms of quality, cost and time. The team worked very well as part of an integrated delivery team with the Employer to the benefit of the project
