Knights Brown, the privately owned and independent construction company with a division in Bridgend, begins work this week on the design and construction of a steel frame bulk storage shed for Associated British Ports. The £2.5m contract was won by Knights Brown’s Wales Division in the autumn. Work will take about seven months to complete.
The bulk storage shed will be approximately 3,000m² and located at Alexandra Dock. The design allows for further expansion to meet future demand.
Work comprises foundations, a structural steel frame, and perimeter in-situ reinforced concrete retaining walls as well as the design and installation of the electrical distribution and lighting system.
The Port of Newport handles around 2.2m tonnes of cargo a year, supporting 3,000 local jobs and contributing £186m a year to the Welsh economy. This new facility will support demand for high quality storage of a range of cargo handled by the port.
Knights Brown’s Divisional Director, Andrew Eilbeck said: “Knights Brown has extensive experience of working in port environments including as current framework contractor in the Port of Dover, and several projects with ABP at Southampton.
I am really pleased we have this new opportunity to be working with ABP locally. Design work will take about six weeks and with work at Alexandra Dock getting underway this week.”
