Knights Brown’s Wales Division has been out in the community taking civil engineering into a Bridgend primary school.

Inspired by a desire to raise the profile of the importance of community engagement within our business, employees from Knights Brown approached the school to ask if they would like the opportunity to experience the Institution of Civil Engineers ‘Bridges to School’ programme.

Over 60 pupils from St Mary’s RC Primary School in Bridgend took part in the special event and got the opportunity to test their skills building a model replica of the Second Severn Crossing. The pupils constructed a 15m model of the cable stayed bridge, whilst taking on various construction management roles and learning about the importance of safety on construction sites.

The aim of the sessions is to inspire and educate the next generation of civil engineers and construction workers.

The mini engineers were fully kitted out with high-vis vests, goggles, hard hats and gloves and by the end had successfully constructed and walked across the bridge they had built.

Contracts Manager for Knights Brown, Tim Waller, said: “Bridges to Schools is a fantastic way of engaging with primary schools because the children have such fun while learning so much about the construction industry. We hope this will have made a positive impact so that in years to come, some of the pupils will remember it and consider construction as a career option.”
