    A design and construct contract for ABP to reinforce and upgrade the quayside to support RoRo operations and the opening of the new fifth cruise terminal, ‘Horizon’.

    The works took place over 400m of the quayside and included the replacement of over 5,000m² of heavy duty fibre reinforced concrete paving and incorporated ship-to-shore power connectivity.

    Also included were 14, 150-tonne bollards that increase flexibility for the positioning of large ships at the port which further supports ABP’s cargo operations.

    A service trough and crane rail running parallel to the quayside enable the operation of a pair of airbridges (for passenger embarkation/debarkation at the cruise terminal).

    Our solution, developed with Marbas, significantly reduced the amount of hydro demolition needed to the quay and rationalised the anchorage arrangement, to achieve time and cost savings.

    This complex and challenging project was a collaborative undertaking from the outset. Combining two projects was inspirational, saving not only money but diverting 22,000m3 from landfill. Some extremely innovative tools and methods were used to demolish the pier, recover material and to achieve the lowest environmental impact on one of the most environmentally designated places in the UK.

    Knights Brown was a great client to deal with. We felt from the very outset that they worked with us rather than for us, demonstrating real collaboration in order to minimise disruption to the port. The works were also delivered through a very challenging time, with the latter stages coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Their approach to this was thoroughly professional, with health and safety the primary consideration. Working practices were strictly amended and monitored, with the project completed to the satisfaction of all involved.
