This was the second project awarded to Knights Brown by Broadview Energy due to our high standard and professionalism when dealing with challenging schemes such as this piling heavy scheme.
The project involved the design and construction of the civil engineering works associated with a five turbine Repower MM92 wind farm. Works included modifications to a site entrance alongside the construction of new tracks, a site compound, crane hard standing and turbine foundations.
Electrical works were undertaken through our partner, Powersystems UK Ltd and included HV and LV communications cabling, contestable elements for the grid connection and the installation of a HV circuit breaker.
We installed over 2km of trenching for the grid connections, with two directional drilled road crossings. A switch-gear and metering building of traditional design was constructed on site to house the electrics.
A piled solution was required for four of the five turbine foundations, with 1,000 m3 of soil replacement required for the fifth foundation. Aarsleff Piling, a trusted working partner of Knights Brown installed the driven piles.
Following excavation works, the new tracks were constructed from imported, recycled aggregate and blast furnace slag sourced from local suppliers and steel works.
All excavations and topsoil stripping were carried out under an archaeological watching brief and all tree felling was undertaken in the presence of an ecologist to check for potential roosting bats.
The five REpower MM 92 turbines were installed on site in the timescale agreed. These REpower turbines featured a tower end-can arrangement which was lifted into place prior to tower installation.
