    CMDP JV for Southern Water

    Bewl Water, Lamberhurst, Kent

Bewl Water is a 28m high earth embankment dam situated around 3km south of Lamberhurst, on the border between Kent and Sussex. The embankment has a crest length of around 930m and is orientated roughly north-west to south-east across the valley of the River Bewl and impounds a reservoir, with a capacity at top water level of  31 billion litres. It is the largest stretch of open water in South East England.

Via our framework arrangement, we are partnering with the CMDP JV (Costain/MWH) and working in conjunction with Southern Water to deliver part of the ambitious AMP 7 programme of works to improve Bewl Water’s climate resilience. The flood control security measures will protect the provision of drinking water in East Sussex and Kent.

Since 2022, we have been working collaboratively with the whole design team, assisting and contributing through design workshops with programming, buildability, delivery methodologies and costings. Work on site began in early 2023.

The joint delivery team is installing three steel, large diameter (1.7m and 1.6m) hydraulic siphon pipes with associated stilling and valve chambers and supporting control infrastructure, over the crest of the dam into the spillway/discharge location in the valley below.

Commissioning and testing will follow completion of the construction works.

    our sectors

Knights Brown was a great client to deal with. We felt from the very outset that they worked with us rather than for us, demonstrating real collaboration in order to minimise disruption to the port. The works were also delivered through a very challenging time, with the latter stages coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Their approach to this was thoroughly professional, with health and safety the primary consideration. Working practices were strictly amended and monitored, with the project completed to the satisfaction of all involved.

Knights Brown performed very well on this project in terms of quality, cost and time. The team worked very well as part of an integrated delivery team with the Employer to the benefit of the project

    - Marc Bryan, Portsmouth City Council

The team at Knights Brown has done a fantastic job in creating the largest JLR Aftersales Centre in the UK, working alongside GEMCO Sales & Service who fitted out the facility to the highest standard. With 29 service bays in total, Dorset is now future-proofed for servicing the JLR product.
