Knights Brown has been appointed as principal contractor on a design and construct basis to build a 6MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Dorking, Surrey.

The works comprise design and construction of the civil engineering elements of the BESS including the foundation structures for a new barn structure, foundation structures for all BESS containers and electrical equipment and foundation structures for a separate 11kVa ring main unit and auxiliary transformer that will be adopted by the distribution network operator, UKPN.

Dorking is the first project to be constructed following the announcement of a major new partnership between Grid Battery Storage Limited and Siemens, who are fulfilling the role of principal designer and suppling the BESS.

The 11kVa cabling works will cross various utilities and four strategic water mains, which supply water to Dorking.

Once our works are complete, we will maintain the role of principal contractor through the commissioning and energisation phase until the project is complete.

    our sectors

Knights Brown performed very well on this project in terms of quality, cost and time. The team worked very well as part of an integrated delivery team with the Employer to the benefit of the project

    - Marc Bryan, Portsmouth City Council

Site staff were pleased to have had Knights Brown on the team, they were proactive from day one to the end towards potential issues and responsive to a changing site environment for works.

    - David Sheldon, Cummins

Sites are always very well presented. First impressions count and if a site looks well organised and clean when you arrive then generally this is applied throughout the management of the projects. Indeed, all five projects I am Cummins PM for, have been managed to a high standard and equally the safety records and standards are very good.
