Knights Brown, a privately owned and independent construction company, has showcased its commitment to developing its people by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.

The 5% Club is a movement of more than 500 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers. Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes, to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members are also asked to publicly report their progress in their annual report.

Already, almost 12% of Knights Brown’s workforce is employed through apprenticeships, as sponsored students, or graduates undertaking a formal development programme. Knights Brown is committed to continuing to build on these numbers. One route will be through collaboration with Fareham College, with who the company helped establish an apprenticeship programme for groundworkers, which takes place at the Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC). Knights Brown also has strong links with the universities and colleges local to its three divisional offices in Hampshire, Kent and South Wales.

Additionally, the company’s head office support services, also based in Hampshire, have recently introduced new apprenticeships in disciplines such as Finance.

Providing opportunities for all employees to learn while working and developing skills along the way, remains a priority. Knights Brown is keen to continue to increase the number of new entrants into the construction industry and its business. In doing so, these individuals bring fresh ideas and perspectives enabling it to progress while at the same time, creating opportunities for individuals to develop their careers.

Gill Cronin, Director of Operations of The 5% Club said:

“We’re delighted to welcome Knights Brown into membership. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR professionals, sharing and learning from each other.  All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths.”
