September marks the anniversary of our rebrand so the change in the season is a good time for us to take stock of our achievements and look ahead at what’s to come.

2017 – 2019

Over the past two years, we have grown significantly so that we now employ over 300 people.

We’ve delivered some significant projects, such as the third phase of the North Portsea Flood Defences, and an after care facility and showroom for the Jaguar Land Rover brand. We’ve created an iconic roadside advertising structure, ‘the Kensington’, in central London for JCDecaux, part of the world’s leading outdoor advertising company. And we expanded our expertise in on-shore wind to encompass the Republic of Ireland. Our specialist teams have also helped customers leading the way in providing peak demand power to the National Grid.

We have secured our position with Gatwick Airport, delivering over £7m’s worth of projects under their low complexity civils framework, and won a civil engineering framework with Port of Dover for reactive and planned maintenance.

We are in year three of a four year infrastructure framework for the Army Basing Programme with Aspire Defence in Tidworth and Bulford camps and have completed works at multiple locations and on numerous garrison assets.

In the first full year of our joint venture consortium with Hanson for the South Wales Trunk Road Agent, we achieved a combined turnover in excess of £12m and completed more than 70 projects.

The variety and depth of our portfolio is testament to the strength and capability of our teams.

Being privately owned and independent means we can act swiftly and efficiently to meet our customers’ needs, solve difficult issues, and deliver work in a range of environments.

Looking Ahead

Just last month we secured a design and construct contract with Portsmouth International Port and are currently developing an efficient design solution prior to starting on site in November. We are also at an ECI phase with Neath & Port Talbot Council for their promenade improvements scheme at Aberavon.

It seems that in just two short years, we’ve achieved such a lot and have so much to look forward to. It’s not until you take time to reflect that you realise how much has been achieved. Our rebranding anniversary provides a useful reminder for us to do just that.

Knights Brown Day

To coincide with our anniversary, which we call Knights Brown Day, we produced our first company video, which features our people and captures the essence of our business. It showcases our projects and our focus on delivering projects we’re proud of.

Proud of What We Do

We also asked our senior leadership team to tell us what from the past two years has made them proud.

Andrew Eilbeck, Divisional Director, Wales & Energy:
“Our team has grown in number, capability and experience, successfully diversifying so we are no longer reliant on the wind farm industry. We have moved office, entered new markets, begun to self-deliver projects with our own workforce and invested in our own plant. We have a successful partnership with Hanson working with SWTRA, and are currently delivering our largest single project to date for Rockwool. It’s a real tribute to the great people we employ.”

Rupert Blake, Divisional Director, South East:
“Our team is always up for a challenge and are good at overcoming obstacles we are faced with. Our dedicated framework teams in the Port of Dover and at Gatwick Airport work in highly regulated and very visible environments. We are maintaining effective relationships with our customers, project stakeholders, and the travelling public, which is essential to the success of the works we carry out.”

Bryan Kennedy, Divisional Director, Southern:
“Having spent much of my career with large public companies, joining Knights Brown in January was a welcome and refreshing change. We have an integrated civil engineering and building business that is both agile and adaptable. Combined with our established workforce and quick and effective decision making, our customers find us to be both responsive and competitive.”

Darren Wootton, Commercial Director:
“We are always looking for ways to encourage and sustain a culture of continual improvement in quality and delivery. Right Works was created as a code of practice for everyone at Knights Brown to pursue, as a guide to continuously develop and improve our work. When we adopt Right Works, we flourish and experience real improvements, and the incremental gains we make keep pushing us in the right direction. Moreover, the work we do is enjoyable and rewarding. Our reputation and our ability to secure profitable work are both enhanced by our focus on improvement. We invest in our future and are financially stable and resilient, and critically, people want to work with and for us.”

Sarah Whittle, People & Talent Director:
“People are at the centre of our work. We’ve been consciously working to attract the best talent to our business and to help them develop in their work and stay with us. When we launched our new brand, we took the opportunity to better understand who we are. Our employees helped shape six guiding principles, which describe the values that are important to us. These go from strength to strength and are reinforced in how we work today. Our employee numbers have grown sustainably over the last two years and our employee retention remains strong. We are defined by our people and we continue to involve them in shaping our future.”
